14. Optimizing Sleep

w/ Rob Sweetman

Rob Sweetman is an entrepreneur and former Navy SEAL who served on active duty from 2010 to 2018. After his time in the military, he turned his attention to studying sleep and helping others get a better night’s rest. He now runs both for-profit and nonprofit sleep enterprises. Many people know him as the “sleep genius.”

During our conversation, we discussed the causes and effects of long-term sleep deprivation and disruption, the prefrontal cortex vs. the amygdala, the ideal amount of sleep, night and shift work, short sleeping, safety concerns with a lack of sleep, keeping a sleep diary, winding down before bed, when to go to sleep and wake up, biphasic sleeping and napping, sleeping with background noise and ambient light, bedroom temperature, the effects of WIFI, sleep tracking with wearables, mattress selection, and other topics.

Many of us now take sleep more seriously than ever. Hopefully, this episode will help explain why.

RARE SENSE
RARE SENSE
The Uncommon Pursuit of Mind Fitness.
RARE SENSE® is hosted by Chris Irwin, a Navy SEAL veteran who faced chronic mental and physical illness for over a decade after his military service. Throughout his journey, he delved into various aspects of mental training, including meditation, breathing exercises, emotional release techniques, and energy work. This pursuit eventually led to the complete alleviation of his symptoms, both mental and physical. He emerged with a profound understanding of what it takes to build a genuinely fit mind. On this podcast, Chris uses the knowledge he gained during that journey to discuss the modern mental health landscape while being completely vulnerable and open about his own experiences and struggles. Mental health isn't something to just treat. It's something to train.
