This month's article discussed “self-care” and why I feel that term may be somewhat of a misnomer. Often, we need the company of a group, not more alone time. In Lost Connections, Johann Hari talks about how the lack of meaningful connections to numerous things, including other humans, is the root cause of many mental health issues.
Yesterday, a fellow veteran reminded me that despite what some may say, our grandparents did have a type of self-care that reinforces this point. They frequently engaged in social behavior like bowling leagues, poker nights, and bridge clubs. That’s old-school therapy—talking it out with buddies.
The other thing I love about this book is the light it sheds on how the pharmaceutical industry brings mental health drugs to market.
