In Episode 14 of the RARE SENSE Podcast, I interviewed the “sleep genius,” Rob Sweetman. During that discussion, he mentioned Matthew Walker and his work studying sleep. In my opinion, Matt’s book Why We Sleep pretty much covers anything you would ever want to know on the topic. He talks about the biology of sleep, how much you need, how dreaming works, sleep disorders, the effects of alcohol and caffeine, and sleep remedies. It’s exceptionally comprehensive.
The bottom line is that sleep is just as important, if not more so, than diet and exercise to your health. Gone should be the days of getting by on minimal amounts as a norm and mantras like, “You can sleep when you die.” Acting this way is actually accelerating that process.
However, be forewarned that you might find this book terrifying if you are prone to anxiety. I think back to all the nights I sacrificed rest to work, party, drink, etc., and realize how much damage I’ve already done. Luckily, I take my shuteye more seriously now than ever. It’s not being lazy. It’s being smart.
